Although you might think an adult site would be just like any other site, there are some interesting differences. Perhaps most importantly, adult sites seem to exist in a seperate Internet universe. Think of normal Internet browsing as occuring in a light universe, whereas adult Internet browsing would occur in a dark universe.

This is useful, because it illustrates the difficulty of capturing traffic from one zone and transferring it to the other. If you have a non-adult site, the last thing you generally want to do is be associated with adult content, products or services. If you own an adult site, about the only thing you can promote is adult content, products or services.

That being said, there are some exceptions, and taking advantage of them to pipe traffic back and forth between these two universes will give you an advantage. For example, a friend of mine has built an interesting link list style adult site. I could send you there without being closely associated with adult material myself. In return, I'd ask him to work in a link to this site.

Another way that being an adult webmaster is different than managing a normal site is in hosting requirements. You need to find an adult friendly host that provides you with the features you will require. You may find free hosting offered by some sponsors, but that is only going to be available if you promote their products exclusively.

If you are going to be in the adult business, then you will likely want to register your domain such that your identity is not revealed. This doesn't mean that law enforcement could not find you, but it does mean that the average web user won't be able to look up your registration details to get at the contact information used. Since I am not in the adult business, I don't know all that much about any of the specifics. However, I would suggest that you find and sign up on a few of the web forums that deal with this industry. One that my friend recommends is Web Overdrive. The people there would be able to recommend specific products and services that you would possibly have some success with. However, keep in mind, you are a potential competitor, so they are helpful and friendly, but not overly motivated to make you a success.
